We are currently exploring several directions for a potential DIY kit version of the Resonator, potentially consisting of optional parts for sale to complement an open source build template. The focus would be on providing clear, practical information that enables builders with basic woodworking skills to construct an instrument by hand, with the option to purchase Pickups and Drivers and bridge assemblies as required.
The DIY instrument and audio community has been instrumental in the development of this instrument so we would love to contribute something that other makers can build upon and develop to their own needs.
In addition, there is potential for the driver coil and magnet assembly to be developed as a stand alone tactile transducer, with applications beyond a resonator instrument.
If any of these concepts are of interest, we’d love to hear from you. Feedback and enquiries will help shape what form these future options take.
A full size EMT style plate reverb has been on my bucket list for a long time. Back in 2017 I made a Lo-Fi plate with some bits and pieces I had laying around, and I used it extensively. Since developing the resonator driver coil I can now make all the necessary parts from scratch, and I have a detailed design ready to go. It requires a welded steel frame to tension the 1.2 X 2.4m X 0.5mm thick steel sheet within which is expensive and very large so for now this concept is on the shelf. I am currently seeking a local studio happy to invest in a heavily discounted (cost price) unit so I can bring this design into the real world with a forever home ready and waiting.
Back in 2012, I built a 3-string slide guitar from a piece of scrap jarrah decking. It was a simple instrument, but incredibly fun to play, and I used it with my band for around six years. We toured it through Brisbane, Sydney, and beyond, and it always drew curiosity and conversation wherever it went.
Now, years later, I’m revisiting and refining that original idea into a more developed instrument available in a small range of models. I’m currently finalising the design of custom 3-string pickups and will soon begin prototyping the woodworking and construction.
Once the initial prototypes are complete, I’ll be looking for play-testing volunteers, people in Melbourne or nearby who are interested in taking an instrument on loan for a few months to put it through its paces and provide feedback before production begins. If that sounds like something you’d enjoy, feel free to get in touch.
